Description
Michigan Rummy is a classic family card game that combines elements of rummy, poker, and hearts. Long enjoyed as a social, casino-style game, it is played with cards and betting chips around a shared board, making it lively, interactive, and ideal for group play.
This tournament-style edition features a solid six-sided wooden game board, 15 inches diagonally, accommodating up to six players. The board includes built-in chip troughs and felt feet to protect table surfaces. Alongside the main Michigan Rummy game, the rotating centre discs allow play of three additional games: Great Lakes (a betting game of chance like Michigan Rummy but with new twists and strategies), Wanagan (a challenging poker-style game where player’s hands change as they discard to their opponents) and Oh Claire (a multiple-round, trick-taking game where accurate bidding wins the most chips), offering four games in one well-made set.
At the start of each deal, players place betting chips onto designated sections of the board before all cards are dealt, including a dummy hand. A brief poker round is played first using five-card hands, with chips collected by the winning poker hand. Players then move into the Michigan Rummy phase, where cards are played in ascending sequence by suit. Certain cards act as pay cards, allowing players to collect chips from specific areas of the board.
Play continues as suits are opened, stopped, and reopened, with players aiming to discard all their cards. The first player to do so wins the central Michigan Rummy pot. Games continue with the deal rotating, and any remaining chips after the final game may be resolved with a final poker showdown. The mix of card sequencing, betting, and poker elements keeps every game varied and engaging.
