History of Staunton Chess
Until the mid 19th century, chessmen were either hard to distinguish or top-heavy and impractical. The Staunton chess set was designed in response to these issues. The design was invented by Nathaniel Cook and released by Jaques of London in 1849. The chess set is named after an English chess master – Howard Staunton who endorsed the design.
By the end of the 19th century, Staunton chess set had become the de-facto standard for chess pieces and remains the standard chess piece form today.
