Chinese Chess or Xiang Qi is often quoted as the most popular board game in the world. This is more to do with the population of China than to any general acceptance globally but none-the-less there are many positive aspects to this interesting and very old version of Chess.

Chinese Chess has a couple of rules and pieces that are an intriguing surprise for the Western Chess enthusiast looking to expand their field of interest. One Xiang Qi piece is restricted within the square that is the ‘palace’, another piece is forbidden to cross over the centre of the board known as the ‘river’ and the Canon captures in a way that is unique to Chinese Chess.

This luxury Xiang Qi set features beautifully carved round wooden pieces measuring 50mm, each decorated with traditional characters. The pieces are stored neatly inside a smart presentation case embossed with Chinese symbols and lined with orange felt to protect the set during storage and transport. A roll up leatherette board is included and fits inside the case alongside the pieces, making this a complete and practical set for regular play.

The sturdy case is secured with a metal clasp and measures 29.5 x 22.5 x 5cm, while the leatherette board measures 48.5 x 44cm when laid flat. Everything packs away neatly into the case, keeping the set protected and organised between games.

Please note the leatherette board is folded to fit inside the case, so light creasing is likely, although this does not affect gameplay. The pieces do not include English text or notation, but with a careful read of the rules this should not be a barrier to learning and enjoying the game.
