Description
Aigo is a special version of Go developed for the blind and visually impaired community. The man largely responsible for popularising this version is Kakishima Mitsuharu, who lost his sight at the age of 23. Inspired to take up Go through anime, Kakishima went on to expand his circle of friends and find a greater sense of purpose through Aigo.
By travelling around Japan and promoting the game in schools for the blind and other communities, he has helped open up Go to those for whom it was not previously accessible, sharing the same sense of fulfilment he discovered.
These Aigo Go Sets, designed for blind and visually impaired players, are available in both 13 x 13 and 19 x 19 board sizes. Each set features raised lines on the MDF board, allowing the playing area to be clearly felt during play. The stones have a star-shaped underside so they can be securely placed on the ridged surface.
The smaller 13 x 13 set includes approximately 180 plastic stones (90 of each colour), while the larger 19 x 19 set includes approximately 360 stones (180 of each colour).
The white stones have a smooth surface, while the black stones feature protruding circular lines on top, enabling players to distinguish between them by touch alone.
These Go sets are not mass produced and are specially handmade in Japan for the blind community. They are then directly imported to the UK, which contributes to their higher price compared to many of our other Go sets.
Please note the 19 x 19 set is constructed of 4 separate, puzzle like pieces, so must be assembled prior to playing. This allows for eaiser storage of the larger board.
